Creative practioner. I love doing what I do. I find it very difficult to describe what I do. I think that probably there isn’t a great need to describe what I do. I try to keep an open mind as to what I want to do every day, so that it is fresh. If I could predict the future, I would, and probably be a very rich man in the process. But I can’t predict the future, so I want to enjoy myself now and create and create and create. I was brought up in a thatched cottage in the middle of rural Berkshire within an artistic family – going back generations. A bundle (not sure of the collective noun for numerous creative practitioners) of relatives, painters, dancers, writers and poets all ploughing their own creative furrow – not a proper job in sight. It is perhaps not surprising that my brother (Michael) and I should occupy some space in the artworld. Definitions and categories of activity seem unnecessary to me. Science, art, geography, architecture etc etc, I’m not sure that they benefit from being classified as such. I think that topics can benefit from the roving mind surging across their definitions - which is perhaps why Leonardo da Vinci is my all time hero. I wouldn’t like to say to him, ‘ooooh, not sure about those mechanical drawings Leonardo, they aren’t art’. Good design is good design; everything can benefit from the attention of good creative minds, whether it’s a gateway sculpture or a defibrillator. My work to date has included, sculpture, architectural lighting, sculptural lighting, holograms, urban design, seat design, virtual reality, films, cartoons and writing. I love the current technological developments and I love design with spirit. I hope that you enjoy the work. Thank you for visiting my website. Jo Fairfax |
